Its mission to build stronger relationships between scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators in Massachusetts and Switzerland, Swissnex Boston is welcoming the world’s largest solar-powered boat to Boston’s Fan Pier for its inaugural visit, June 22-26. The first boat to travel around the world exclusively powered by solar energy, the MS Turanor PlanetSolar features 29,160 solar panels and produces zero gasoline or CO2 emissions.
Swissnex’s Purpose
The boat is currently carrying out unique scientific measurements along the Gulf Stream as part of the DeepWater expedition led by the University of Geneva to better understand the effects of climate change on the ocean. Planet Solar is making three stops in the United States in Miami, New York, and Boston.
Bern Switzerland is the headquarters for Swissnex and the larger network of scientific counselors. It belongs to the bilateral cooperation of the State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER). Swissnex and the scientific counselors are two complementary instruments of the broader Swiss research and education policy. Switzerland must develop international relations in a targeted fashion in the fields of education, research, and innovation since competition between researchers leads to greater innovations in knowledge-based organizations. The network of Swissnexes and science sections at Swiss embassies Swissnex is a network with nodes in the world’s most innovative hubs, where the future is being shaped. Together with science and technology counselors based in Swiss embassies around the world Swissnex takes an active role in strengthening Switzerland’s leadership as a world-class location for science, education, and innovation.
