The FORTIFIED construction method is a voluntary construction standard backed by decades of research that your roofing contractor or builder can use to help protect your home against severe weather. It is an Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) roofing construction standard that helps protect roofs and homes against the elements.
The IBHS has spent decades studying damage caused by severe weather events. Out of this research, IBHS has developed the FORTIFIED™ program — a voluntary construction and re-roofing program designed to help protect homes against specific types of severe weather such as high winds, hail, and hurricanes. The FORTIFIED™ program offers three levels that build on each other and address different systems of the home.
Certification Requirements
To be eligible for a FORTIFIED Roof™ designation, a roofing contractor must be FORTIFIED™ certified, and must install the roof on a qualifying home in accordance with the applicable FORTIFIED™ Standard. A Certified FORTIFIED™ Evaluator must then independently verify that all requirements are satisfied before IBHS will award a designation. A designation is valid for 5 years and an inspection is required to renew it. GAF and IBHS have formed a strategic alliance to help make FORTIFIED Roofs™ more accessible to homeowners nationwide. Through this partnership, GAF is deploying its training expertise to help GAF Master Elite® Roofing Contractors2 meet the requirements to become FORTIFIED™ Certified.
