Solar-powered technology takes energy from the sun and converts it into thermal or electrical energy. Solar energy is an entirely green energy solution that’s from a clean and abundant renewable energy source. As long as you have access to sunlight, your solar appliances will never run out of fuel. Solar technology is used in a variety of ways, including generating electricity, providing light, heating water, and even ventilating your home. One of the most common forms of solar is photovoltaic cells.
Photovoltaic Basics
Photovoltaic (PV) cells are a very versatile technology that is used in many different applications. Each cell generally only produces 1 or 2 watts of power at a time. However, PV devices string together multiple cells into chains known as panels to boost the efficiency and output of the PV device. PV cells generate power directly from sunlight. They convert light (photons) into electricity (voltage).
PV technology directly converts light into electricity at the atomic level. Some materials exhibit the “photoelectric effect.” This phenomenon causes these materials to absorb photons of light and, in turn, release electrons. PV technology captures these free electrons, producing an electric current.
Applications
So, why does any of this even matter? Photovoltaic systems are becoming far more common and readily available to the average consumer. PV systems are replacing outdated traditional electric technology in markets like home ventilation. A PV system has zero cost to operate and pays for itself within a few years.
