The target they&#8217;ve set to reach <a href=\"https:\/\/solarroyal.com\/wp\/minneapolis-green-energy\/\">100 renewable energy<\/a> and decarbonization is by the year 2045. They&#8217;ve made a <a href=\"https:\/\/solarroyal.com\/wp\/california-environmental-trendsetter\/\">huge leap forward<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200922031423\/https:\/\/www.aes.com\/investors\/press-releases\/press-release-details\/2019\/AES-and-KIUC-Make-History-with-Worlds-Largest-Solar-PV-Peaker-Plant\/default.aspx\">L\u0101wa&#8217;i Solar and Energy Storage Project<\/a>, which will single-handedly\u00a0deliver roughly 11 percent of Kaua\u2019i\u2019s power, making the island more than 50 percent powered by renewables.\u00a0 The project is&#8211;what they claim to be&#8211;the world&#8217;s largest solar-plus-storage peaker. The plant is located on the island of Kaua&#8217;i. It is backed by power producer <a href=\"http:\/\/aes.com\/\">AES Corporation<\/a> and not-for-profit <a href=\"http:\/\/website.kiuc.coop\/\">Kaua&#8217;i island Utility Cooperative<\/a> (KIUC). The project was unveiled Tuesday to much fanfare.<\/p>\n<p>The project consists of a 28 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and a 100 MWh five-hour duration energy storage system.<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9s Gluski, AES President and Chief Executive Officer, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdworld.com\/generation-and-renewables\/aes-and-kiuc-inaugurate-world-s-largest-pv-peaker-plant\">quoted as saying<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Kaua\u2019i has adopted an ambitious renewables mandate and the L\u0101wa\u2019i project will help reduce its reliance on fossil fuels while generating clean, reliable and affordable energy.\u00a0As a supplier of power to Hawaii for more than 25 years, we are honored to have been chosen by KIUC to help demonstrate its commitment to the state\u2019s vision of a cleaner energy future. We believe this project is a significant step toward ushering in the wider era of firm renewables.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The peaker combines solar power with battery-based energy storage. Using this method, safe, reliable, high-quality power can be derived from intermittent renewable energy generation. The L\u0101wa\u2019i project uses a 28-megawatts of <a href=\"https:\/\/solarroyal.com\/wp\/pv-photovoltaic-solar-energy-efficiency\/\">solar PV<\/a> to supply the grid for 5 hours with charging the 20-megawatt lithium-ion battery which will sustain the grid when the solar PV is not supplying the power. When the battery runs too low, the cycle repeats, thus using intermittent solar power as opposed to the more common method of continuous solar power.
